BREAKING: Bahrain Lawmakers Back Total Boycott of Iran in Strong Show of Unity

According to the Gulf Times, in a rare display of complete unity, lawmakers in Bahrain have approved an urgent proposal calling for a sweeping boycott of Iran, signaling a sharp escalation in tensions across the region.

The motion, led by MP Mohamed Al Olaiwi and supported by four fellow MPs, goes far beyond symbolic politics. It calls for cutting all political, diplomatic, economic and even sporting ties with Tehran, effectively severing relations across the board.

At the heart of the proposal is a plan to block all Iranian imports from entering Bahrain and to immediately halt trade between the two countries. Flights and shipping routes, both direct and indirect, would also be suspended. However, businesses already holding Iranian goods won’t be left stranded; they would be given a limited window to sell off or re-export existing stock.

For Mr Al Olaiwi, the stakes could not be higher. “What we’re witnessing is not a political disagreement but a direct threat to Bahrain’s stability and to the safety of the region,” he said. “Parliament has a responsibility to stand firmly in defence of the kingdom’s supreme national interest.”

He made it clear that lawmakers are aiming for decisive action, not just strong words. “This is a clear message that Bahrain will not accept interference, aggression, or threats to its people and its allies. Economic relations cannot continue as if nothing has happened,” he added.

Beyond Bahrain’s borders, the proposal also reflects a broader regional alignment. MPs emphasized their support for allies within the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as Jordan, describing the move as part of a collective response to shared security concerns.

The proposal now heads to the Cabinet, where officials will decide how, and how quickly, it can be put into action. If implemented, the impact could be felt in everyday markets, where Iranian goods like fruits, dairy products, carpets and saffron are commonly sold.

For now, the message from Bahrain’s parliament is unmistakable: the country is prepared to take firm and immediate steps in response to what it sees as growing regional threats.
