The United States carried out strikes on an Iranian military facility near the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official, in the latest escalation threatening the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

The official, who spoke anonymously, said the operation targeted an Iranian ground control station located in Bandar Abbas.

The site was reportedly preparing to launch another drone when US forces carried out what American authorities described as a “measured and defensive” strike.

The incident came only hours after US President Donald Trump dismissed reports suggesting his administration was nearing a compromise agreement with Iran.

The renewed confrontation has raised fears that the already fragile ceasefire established in early April could collapse entirely.

According to Jerusalem Post, the US action was triggered after Iran allegedly launched drones toward a commercial vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

Iranian state media claimed the vessel had switched off its radar systems while navigating the area, prompting Iranian naval forces to stop it by firing warning shots.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later announced that it had retaliated by targeting a US military base connected to the earlier strike.

Iranian media reported that the American attack caused neither casualties nor significant damage.

The latest military exchange has further heightened tensions across the Gulf region.

Kuwait, which hosts major US military facilities, also confirmed that it was responding to missile and drone threats, although it did not specify the source of the attacks.

US Central Command said American forces had also conducted similar “self-defense” strikes earlier in the week against Iranian missile launch sites and boats accused of attempting to lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed violence has shaken hopes for diplomatic progress and pushed global oil prices higher amid fears of wider instability in the Middle East.
