According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, June 1, 2026, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Lawal announced his resignation in a statement where he alleged that the party’s recently concluded primaries were manipulated in favour of Atiku.
According to him, the outcome of the exercise did not reflect a transparent democratic process, claiming that results were altered to favour certain interests within the party.
The former SGF stated that he could no longer remain in the ADC because he disagreed with the manner in which the primary election was conducted.
Lawal further alleged that some candidates who emerged victorious during parts of the exercise were later replaced by individuals aligned with the party’s presidential candidate.
He maintained that his decision was informed by personal conviction and his desire not to be associated with any process he considered unfair.
His resignation comes only days after the ADC concluded its presidential primary election ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
