According to Channels TV on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticized what he described as selective reactions to cases of kidnapping in the country, questioning why previous abductions of teachers in Abuja did not attract the same level of public protests seen following the recent kidnapping of teachers and students in Oyo State.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Wike said Nigerians should avoid politicizing insecurity and instead focus on supporting efforts to secure the release of victims.
According to him, teachers had previously been kidnapped in the FCT without triggering nationwide demonstrations or widespread public outrage.
“Teachers have been kidnapped before in the FCT. Why was there no protest in the country? Does it mean that the teachers in Abuja are not important? Why is it that people never rose up to say, ‘Let the teachers in Abuja also be released?’” he asked.
The minister maintained that all cases of kidnapping deserve equal concern regardless of location, stressing that the safety of every Nigerian should be treated as a priority.
Wike added that government officials and security agencies remain concerned about the plight of the abducted victims and are working towards addressing the country’s security challenges.
He also rejected suggestions that any government would deliberately allow kidnapping and other forms of insecurity to continue, describing such claims as unfair and unrealistic.
The minister urged Nigerians to support ongoing security efforts while avoiding actions that could turn security matters into political disputes.
