BREAKING: “Why Is A Party With 31 Governors And About 90% Of The National Assembly Still Panicking?–Abdullahi
According to a report by The Cable on Sunday, March 29, 2026, the African Democratic Congress has outlined its plans for selecting a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election, indicating a preference for a consensus-based approach.
Party officials explained that while multiple methods exist for candidate selection, the leadership is focusing on uniting members through discussion and agreement rather than relying on competitive primaries.
This strategy reflects the party’s effort to strengthen cohesion and present a unified front in preparation for the upcoming national polls.
According to the party’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the options available for choosing the presidential candidate include direct primaries and consensus, with indirect primaries no longer permitted under the amended Electoral Act.
The spokesperson emphasized that a consensus method is considered the most suitable for the party, as it can minimize internal conflict and ensure broad acceptance of the chosen candidate among members and supporters.
This approach is intended to streamline the nomination process while maintaining fairness within the party structure.
Abdullahi also highlighted the party’s view of the current political landscape in Nigeria, critiquing the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He suggested that the APC’s dominance is largely linked to its current leadership, describing the party as having been created to serve specific political objectives, particularly to secure the presidencies of the late Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu.
He argued that the party has largely fulfilled its original purpose and faces new challenges as political contests evolve ahead of the next general election.
The ADC spokesperson further expressed concern about the perceived anxiety within the APC despite its wide control over political offices, including 31 governorships and a significant majority in the National Assembly.
Abdullahi suggested that this unease is reflected in attempts to destabilize other opposition parties, indicating a highly competitive environment as the 2027 election approaches.
His remarks suggest that the ADC sees opportunities to strengthen its position by maintaining unity and preparing for a focused campaign strategy.
He said, “Why is a party with 31 governors and about 90 percent of the national assembly still panicking? Why are they still trying to destabilise other opposition parties?.”
