US President Donald Trump says he has cancelled a major US military strike on Iran that was reportedly scheduled for Tuesday, following what he described as renewed diplomatic momentum involving key Gulf allies.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump claimed he was urged by several regional leaders — including Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan — to pause the planned operation.
According to him, the leaders believe that serious negotiations with Tehran have resumed and could lead to a workable agreement.
Trump said the proposed deal would ensure “NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS FOR IRAN,” though he did not clearly specify whether this would include a permanent halt to uranium enrichment or a time-limited restriction.
According to Times of Israel, he suggested that recent diplomatic developments made a military strike unnecessary for now.
The US president added that, based on the advice of these Gulf partners, he had instructed senior defense officials — including the Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Daniel Caine — to stand down from the planned attack.
However, he also warned that the military remains on standby and could launch a “full, large scale assault” if negotiations fail or if Iran does not reach an acceptable agreement.
Trump framed the decision as a temporary pause rather than a full cancellation, emphasizing that military action remains an option depending on how talks progress.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.
Tehran has not publicly signaled willingness to fully halt enrichment or significantly limit its missile program, both of which remain central points of disagreement in negotiations.
