BREAKING: Senate Halts Emergency Session on Highly Anticipated State Police Bill After Lawmaker’s Death
According to a report by The Punch on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday abruptly suspended its emergency plenary session, temporarily delaying the consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill following the tragic passing of a House of Representatives member, Hon. Yaya Tongo.
Lawmakers had cut their recess short to accelerate action on the crucial constitutional amendment transmitted by President Bola Tinubu, which aims to set up a dual policing framework to address rising national insecurity.
However, a somber mood took over the National Assembly when Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.

The lawmaker passed away on June 12, 2026, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness. Tongo, who secured re-election to the 10th National Assembly under the Peoples Democratic Party, had recently defected to the African Democratic Congress in March 2026.
Following the announcement, Akpabio declared that legislative activities would be put on hold to honour their fallen colleague.
“Let me mention that we will not go into any other discussion today,” Akpabio said during the session. “With heavy hearts, I announce the passing of our Honourable Member of the House of Representatives, Mallam Yaya Tongo. Our sympathies go with the family.”
After observing a minute of silence, the upper chamber adjourned the session. The suspension delays urgent legislative matters, including the executive bill proposed to tackle banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency across Nigeria.
The Senate is expected to reconvene on Wednesday to resume deliberations on the historic security reform bill.
