In a recent interview on Arise TV, Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party Board of Trustees and former Niger State governor, Babangida Aliyu, weighed in on the legal disputes surrounding the party’s leadership crisis, pointing to key judicial decisions that have shaped the current situation.
Aliyu stated, “The Appeal Court nullified the convention and the Supreme Court affirmed it,” underscoring the legal position that has invalidated the party’s controversial national convention. According to him, the rulings have created significant implications for the structure and legitimacy of leadership within the People’s Democratic Party.
He explained that the affirmation by the apex court has effectively settled the matter, leaving no room for further interpretation regarding the status of the convention. The development, he noted, has deepened the crisis within the party, as different factions continue to interpret the outcome in ways that suit their interests.
Aliyu emphasized that the focus should now shift from legal battles to reconciliation, warning that prolonged disputes could weaken the party ahead of future elections. He added that political stability within the party is essential if it hopes to remain competitive against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He concluded that while the court has done its part, it is now the responsibility of party leaders to find a political solution that will restore unity and direction.
