Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist Dele Farotimi has accused presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga of promoting internal divisions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging interference aimed at weakening the political influence of Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Farotimi claimed that recent developments within opposition parties reflect a pattern of strategic disruption. He referenced earlier tensions within the Labour Party, where factional disputes involving party figures created instability. According to him, those issues appeared to subside after Obi distanced himself from the party.

Farotimi argued that a similar situation is now unfolding within the ADC, suggesting that Obi’s association with the party has coincided with renewed controversy. He alleged that Onanuga has been actively promoting the emergence of a factional national chairman, Nafiu Bala, raising questions about the neutrality of the presidency in opposition party affairs.

In his remarks, Farotimi questioned the timing and intent behind these developments, implying that political interests may be influencing internal party dynamics. He maintained that such actions could undermine democratic processes by creating unnecessary divisions within opposition ranks.

He also commented on the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in recent leadership disputes, particularly concerning decisions affecting factions aligned with former Senate President David Mark. While acknowledging that legal or procedural grounds might be cited for such actions, Farotimi expressed doubts about whether they align with broader principles of fairness and justice.
