BREAKING: Obi Questions Nation-Building as Intellectual Spaces Continue to Vanish
According to a report by Punch on Saturday, April 25, 2026, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over what he described as a repeated pattern of cancelled academic engagements in Nigerian universities.
He warned that such developments may be affecting the space for intellectual engagement within higher institutions across the country.
His comments were contained in a statement released on Saturday through his verified page on X, where he detailed recent experiences involving scheduled university lectures that were later called off.
Obi explained that he was scheduled to deliver a keynote lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University at 9am on the same day before proceeding to another engagement in Ibadan for a political summit.
According to him, arrangements for the university lecture had been completed ahead of time, and expectations were already set for the event to hold as planned.
However, he stated that he was later informed that the lecture would no longer take place, despite earlier confirmations and preparations.
He further stated that the cancellation was not an isolated case, noting that similar situations had occurred on multiple occasions in the past.
Obi disclosed that he had experienced more than ten instances where scheduled academic engagements were either postponed or cancelled unexpectedly.
He described the pattern as concerning, especially when considering the role universities play in shaping intellectual discourse and public engagement.
He added that repeated disruptions of academic programmes raise questions about consistency in institutional planning and coordination.
Obi also referenced a similar development involving his alma mater, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
He explained that an inaugural annual lecture organised in honour of the late Professor Frank Ndili, a former Vice Chancellor of the institution, was also cancelled on the day it was meant to hold.
According to him, the cancellation of such a significant academic event further reflects a worrying trend affecting scheduled intellectual gatherings within Nigerian universities.
In comparing his experiences within Nigeria to those abroad, Obi stated that he had delivered lectures at several international institutions within the past two years without disruption.
He mentioned engagements at universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, and Imperial College London.
He noted that these experiences showed a contrast in how academic engagements are handled in different environments, particularly in relation to consistency and openness.
He said, “We must ask ourselves: what kind of nation are we building if spaces meant for intellectual engagement are gradually shrinking? A country’s progress is anchored on its ability to encourage knowledge, debate, and the contest of ideas, not restrict them.”
Favor As Higher Power?
(The hidden truth)
Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor. Favor is silent, spiritual and higher power. For spiritual guidance, other solutions, call/Whatsapp Dr J.A. Faros on 07030514063. With God, all are possible.
