Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has declared his political independence from Peter Obi, saying the former Anambra governor has no control over his political decisions.

‎Speaking on Symfoni TV, Baba-Ahmed said he refused to follow Obi when he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that switching parties would not solve the underlying problems they faced.

‎”They thought I would follow Peter, but I had given enough sympathy there,” he said. “I thought, as a leader, what he should do was to sort the problem out.”

‎Baba-Ahmed questioned the logic behind the move, asking why a new party would be any different. “If Abure was a problem, what makes him think Ralph Nwosu or David Mark of ADC will not be a problem? What makes you think the chairman of NDC will not be a problem?” he said. “It is the same thing wherever you go. Stay here and fix this problem.”

‎He made clear that Obi had no authority over his political path. “With due respect, he does not own my politics. He does not own me. I am independent,” Baba-Ahmed said. “I told him, ‘All right, sir. I had different reasons for coming to join you. If you want to move, go ahead.'”

‎He revealed that his comments were twisted to mean he said ADC lacked sense, a claim he firmly denied. “God knows I did not say that,” he said, Baba-Ahmed maintained that those who took offense have now seen his predictions play out exactly as he warned.
