According to a report by The Sun on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the 2027 presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president of Nigeria, voiced his concerns on Monday about the unauthorised disclosure of information obtained from the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He asserted that Nigerians are still due an answer from the electoral authority about how critical voter data from its limited platform became accessible to the public.
Despite INEC’s efforts to reassure the public that its ICT infrastructure was not breached by outside hackers, the former vice president pointed out that the information in issue was accessed using valid official credentials.
He claims that the revelation has caused people to worry about how the electoral authority is protecting the data that has been entrusted to it.
According to Atiku, the important concern is not whether the commission’s computers were compromised from the outside, but rather, the unauthorised access and subsequent dissemination of classified material.
Because voter registration data is crucial to Nigeria’s democratic process, he said, the people of the country ought to know what happened.
Atiku expressed his concern about the incident in a statement released by Phrank Shaibu, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, on his behalf.
He emphasised that concerns regarding responsibility and security in the commission’s data management system are heightened by the unlawful dissemination of information derived from a restricted electoral database.
Lere Olayinka, a spokeswoman for Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, released the content at the center of the dispute, he added.
Since the information did not come from anonymous sources but was spread by an identifiable public official linked with a serving government minister, this aspect of the situation has intensified public concern, according to Atiku.
The data’s exit from the commission’s restricted platform is still a mystery, according to the ex-VP.
Despite INEC’s denial of an external hack on its infrastructure, he maintained that the agency has failed to sufficiently explain how authorised access to sensitive information led to its subsequent release into the public realm.
He was adamant that the panel had to address this outstanding topic directly because it is fundamental to the controversy.
He said, “INEC has confirmed that this information was retrieved using authorised credentials. Nigerians deserve to know how material obtained from a restricted electoral platform found its way into the public domain through individuals closely associated with a serving minister. That question remains unanswered.”
