Kaduna 2027: Uba Sani battles internal revolt over APC primaries

Ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kaduna State, simmering discontent within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over consensus arrangements, alleged candidate imposition and widening elite rivalries is threatening party cohesion, despite Governor Uba Sani’s growing political dominance, SAXONE AKHAINE reports.

Fresh political tensions are brewing within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as disagreements over the adoption of consensus arrangements in the party’s primaries continue to expose cracks within the governing political structure.

At the centre of the unfolding battle is Governor Uba Sani, whose growing political influence within the state APC has generated both admiration and resistance among party stakeholders, especially among aspirants who believe the consensus arrangement being promoted by the party leadership is being used to edge them out of the contest.

Though Sani appears firmly in control of the party machinery in Kaduna, recent developments suggest that beneath the surface lies simmering resentment that could escalate into a wider intra-party crisis if not carefully managed before the 2027 governorship election.

INEC probes ‘unauthorised’ access to database

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced an investigation into allegations of unauthorized access to its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database and the subsequent leakage of personal information relating to a candidate in a recent political party primary election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The commission disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday by National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

INEC stated that the allegations, which have been circulating on social media and in sections of the mainstream press, are being taken seriously, adding that a thorough investigation has been launched to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

According to the commission, authorized registration officers participating in the ongoing nationwide CVR exercise are granted controlled access to specific components of the registration system to enable them to register new applicants, process transfer requests, and update voter records. It explained that such access is restricted strictly to official duties and is promptly withdrawn at the conclusion of each daily exercise.

Protests spread in Oyo, Ogun, Abuja, Lagos

Nigerians from all walks of life, including members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), civil society organisations (CSOs) and concerned youths, yesterday held solidarity rallies across the country to draw attention to the growing security concerns in the education sector, and to call for the immediate and unconditional release of teachers and learners abducted by bandits in Oyo, Borno and other parts of the country.

This is as the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) warned that it may be compelled to withdraw the services of teachers in public schools nationwide if the worsening insecurity in schools and the continued abduction of teachers and learners across the country are not urgently addressed.

The union cited the abduction of seven teachers and 39 pupils/students from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15 as well as the kidnapping of over 40 pupils/students from Mussa Primary and Secondary Schools in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on the same day.

2027: I may vote Sowore, not APC or ADC — Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, says he is considering voting for activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore in the 2027 general elections, while ruling out support for the major political parties he recently disengaged from.

Lawal made the remarks during an interview on TVC, shortly after announcing his resignation from the African Democratic Congress, a move he linked to alleged irregularities in its presidential primary process that produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as candidate.

He said his decision was not an endorsement of any mainstream contender but a reflection of his dissatisfaction with the available political options.

Describing the political landscape, Lawal expressed frustration with both President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, arguing that neither represented an appealing choice in his assessment of current leadership alternatives.

Ebola alert: FG tightens airport, border screening

The Federal Government has intensified health screening at the country’s airports, seaports and land borders.

It also announced that travellers identified as high-risk or displaying symptoms associated with Ebola and other viral haemorrhagic fevers will be subjected to secondary screening, isolation and referral procedures.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease in parts of East and Central Africa and forms part of a broader national preparedness strategy aimed at preventing the disease from entering Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, which was signed by the Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations, Ado Bako, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said there was currently no confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria but stressed that heightened preparedness measures had been activated nationwide to safeguard public health.
