BREAKING: Kano Clears N32bn Pension Backlog, Pays Additional N5bn in Latest Tranche
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the payment of N32 billion out of the N48 billion backlog of gratuities and death benefits owed to retirees and families of deceased civil servants.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
According to the statement, the latest disbursement of N5 billion—released on Wednesday, April 8, 2026—marks the sixth tranche of payments, bringing the total amount settled so far to N32 billion.
The governor noted that N27 billion had earlier been cleared in five instalments by December 2025, as part of efforts to address inherited liabilities.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fully resolving the outstanding obligations before the end of his first term in office, assuring workers that the issue of unpaid gratuities and death benefits would soon become a thing of the past.
He also expressed appreciation to labour bodies, including the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and the Nigeria Labour Congress, for their support and cooperation throughout the process.
The governor congratulated beneficiaries and urged them to make prudent use of the funds.
In separate remarks, the Head of the Kano State Civil Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota, and the Executive Chairman of the Kano Pension Fund Trustees, Alhaji Habu Muhammad Fagge, commended the administration’s sustained efforts to clear the backlog within its first three years.
