According to a report by Al Jazeera on May 2, 2026, negotiations between the United States and Iran remain stalled, with both sides holding firm to positions that appear difficult to reconcile. Mohamad Elmasry, a professor of media studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, described the situation as largely unchanged in recent weeks, pointing to a persistent lack of progress in bridging the gap between the two countries.
“We continue to be in this kind of holding pattern [as] things haven’t changed much in the last few weeks,” Elmasry told Al Jazeera. He explained that both parties have outlined their expectations clearly, but the differences between them remain substantial.
“The Iranians put out a list of 10 demands, the Americans had their list of 15 demands,” said Elmasry. “And when you just juxtapose those two lists, you can see that the two sides are quite far apart.”
Given these contrasting positions, Elmasry noted that the ongoing impasse is not unexpected. The lack of convergence on key issues continues to hinder any meaningful progress toward renewed dialogue or agreement.
He also highlighted what he sees as a miscalculation by the US administration regarding Iran’s current economic situation. “I think also one of the problems is that the American administration believes that the Iranians are on the verge of an almost imminent oil storage catastrophe,” said Elmasry.
However, he argued that this assessment does not fully reflect the reality on the ground. Iran, according to Elmasry, has already begun implementing alternative measures that could help it manage the pressure and extend its capacity to cope with existing challenges.
Despite this, the Trump administration maintains its view. It “believes that Iran is on the verge of a catastrophe”, and if it just pushes more, the Iranians will surrender “any day now”, said Elmasry.
