Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only a single term if elected President in 2027, insisting that nothing would make him remain in office beyond four years.
The declaration was contained in a report published by The Sun Newspaper on Thursday, May 14, 2026, based on an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV.
Obi said his position was guided by the need for political stability and respect for Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement.
“I want to be a one-term president because of stability,” he said, adding, “I would not stay a day longer than four years, even with a gun to my head.”
Obi also used the interview to criticise the economic direction of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the government of worsening living conditions through rising debt levels and increasing cost of living pressures.
He argued that Nigeria was currently experiencing one of its most difficult economic periods and stressed that leadership should prioritise improving citizens’ welfare rather than remaining in power.
He further referenced global figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, arguing that impactful leadership is defined by quality of governance rather than length of tenure.
The former Anambra State governor has repeatedly made the one-term pledge since joining opposition coalition discussions in 2025 before later aligning with the Nigerian Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
