BREAKING: “Considered Dangerous”: Authorities Warn Public To Avoid Escaped Inmate, Urge Immediate Reporting
According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Thursday, April 16, 2026, The Nigerian Correctional Service in Yobe State has placed a convicted inmate on the wanted list after he escaped custody following a road accident while being transported from Potiskum to Damaturu.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Abdullahi Adamu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, stating that the escape occurred on April 13.
According to the service, the inmate fled after a vehicle conveying prisoners from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum was involved in a crash along the route to Damaturu. The incident happened during rescue efforts at the scene of the accident.
The statement noted that the inmate took advantage of the confusion following the crash and escaped from the location before he could be re-arrested.
The escaped convict has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, 30, from Askiwari village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area. He bears prison number J/1539/24 and was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024.
Authorities have described him as a security risk and urged residents to avoid any form of contact or assistance to him.
“The escaped individual is considered dangerous and members of the public are advised not to have any personal dealings with him,” the statement warned.
The command appealed for public support in tracking him down and asked anyone with useful information to report immediately to security agencies.
Residents were advised to contact the nearest police station or correctional facility if they notice any suspicious movements, particularly around the Potiskum–Damaturu highway.

The service also warned that anyone found aiding or concealing the escapee would be committing a criminal offence and would face prosecution under the law.
