According to a report by The Cable published on May 28, 2026, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has intensified efforts to unify the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku paid a visit to former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi at his residence in Abuja on Thursday, just one day after securing victory in the ADC presidential primary election. The visit is widely viewed as part of ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening cohesion within the party and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders.

The former vice-president was accompanied by several prominent figures, including former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and other senior party officials. Sources familiar with the meeting indicated that discussions focused on promoting party unity and expanding consultations as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

Although the meeting was conducted behind closed doors, no official details regarding the discussions or outcomes had been released at the time of reporting. Neither Atiku nor Amaechi addressed members of the media after the meeting, while party representatives also declined to comment on the resolutions reached.

The meeting came shortly after the ADC presidential primary, where Atiku defeated Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to secure the party’s presidential nomination. Following the conclusion of the exercise, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly expressed concerns about certain aspects of the primary process, prompting calls for greater engagement within the party.

Political observers believe Atiku’s outreach to his former rivals reflects a broader reconciliation strategy designed to heal divisions and build consensus among party members. The effort is seen as crucial in positioning the ADC as a formidable force ahead of the next presidential election.

Party insiders also suggest that the ADC leadership is working to consolidate internal support and maintain stability following the primary contest. By engaging influential stakeholders and former competitors, the party hopes to project unity and strengthen its chances in the highly anticipated 2027 electoral race.

As political realignments continue to shape the opposition landscape, Atiku’s post-primary consultations are expected to play a significant role in determining the ADC’s readiness and cohesion as it prepares for the challenges of the upcoming election cycle.
