In a recent interview with Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, May 16, 2026, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the opposition African Democratic Congress, has dismissed claims that the party is preparing the ground for a presidential ticket for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi was reacting to concerns raised by supporters and political observers over the recent exits of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the party, according to him, suggestions that the ADC leadership had already agreed on a preferred presidential candidate were false and unfair to the party.
He explained that no discussion had taken place within the party leadership about who would emerge as the presidential flagbearer for the next election, he said the party remained open and committed to fairness for every aspirant interested in contesting under its platform.
The ADC spokesman rejected allegations that the party lacked internal democracy, he noted that none of the politicians who left the party, including those who had already obtained nomination forms, could confidently claim they had been promised the party’s ticket.
Abdullahi stressed that the ADC was different from parties where candidates were allegedly imposed by influential leaders and maintained that the party leadership had not endorsed any individual for the presidency and would allow due process to determine its future candidate.
Abdullahi insisted that such claims were based on assumptions and not facts, he said people spreading the narrative were being unfair to the party because there was no evidence to support the allegation.
”So, anyone that tells you anything to the contrary, or that the party is being primed to endorse Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, that person is being preposterous and is not being fair to the leadership of the party because there is no iota of truth to it,” he said.
