According to a report by Punch on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, has dismissed speculations surrounding his recent visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, insisting that the meeting had no political undertone.
Wike spoke on Wednesday while inspecting ongoing road projects in Karu, Apo-Karshi and Kubwa in Abuja. The minister said his relationship with Yilwatda predates the latter’s emergence as APC national chairman, adding that public officials should not be expected to avoid one another because of political differences.
“We were all colleagues before he left for the chairmanship of APC. So, what I should do anytime I see him is to hide? Anytime he sees me, he should run away so people will not say something?” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor explained that the visit was simply a return gesture after Yilwatda had earlier tried unsuccessfully to see him at his office. He also rejected criticism over the absence of an official statement after the meeting, maintaining that he was under no obligation to explain his private interactions to the public.
Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party despite serving in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, warned against attaching political motives to ordinary social engagements. He stressed that his priority remains governance and the delivery of infrastructure projects across the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister added that his focus was on satisfying his appointor and improving the lives of residents through visible development projects rather than responding to public speculation.
