A Presidency source has reportedly criticised the growing operational role of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), describing recent developments within Nigeria’s security structure as unusual and unprecedented.

According to The Punch, the Federal Government approved the appointment of a Special Adviser on Homeland Security after concerns were raised by senior military and intelligence officials over the expanding influence of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in security operations.

Insiders within the Presidency reportedly disclosed that some security chiefs had become uncomfortable with what they perceived as increased involvement of the NSA office in tactical and operational matters usually reserved for the military and other security agencies.

The report noted that disagreements within the security system had gradually affected coordination and confidence among agencies responsible for national security management.

One senior official reportedly argued that the situation reflects institutional overreach capable of creating friction within the nation’s security framework.

“Now, you’ve a strange thing that has never happened before; we now have an ONSA tactical team. It is like he has his own command now,” the source reportedly stated.

The official further maintained that military operations should remain under recognised command structures rather than parallel operational arrangements.

“You will now hear of an ONSA tactical team going on the street. You don’t run a command. You do not run a military formation. That means dabbling in operational matters,” the source added.

The report has since sparked discussions within political and security circles regarding the balance of responsibilities among agencies involved in the country’s security management.
