UEFA has provided an official explanation for overturning a late penalty awarded to Arsenal during their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg. The decision became the central talking point after the referee reversed his initial call following a VAR review. The outcome left the tie evenly poised ahead of the return leg.

The incident happened in the 78th minute of the match. Substitute Eberechi Eze went down inside the penalty area after a challenge from defender David Hancko. Referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded a penalty to Arsenal. The decision appeared to hand the visitors a crucial chance to take the lead late in the game.

The situation changed after intervention from the Video Assistant Referee. Makkelie was instructed to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. He studied several replays before deciding to overturn his original ruling. The penalty was subsequently canceled after the review process.

UEFA released a short statement after the match to clarify the decision. The governing body stated that Atletico Madrid player number 17 did not commit a foul. No further detailed explanation was provided despite widespread debate among fans and analysts.

The controversy has once again raised concerns about the use of VAR in decisive matches. UEFA continues to insist that VAR should only be used for clear and obvious errors. The decision in this case proved highly influential on the final result.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed strong frustration after the match. He stated that the decision was disappointing after reviewing the incident. He argued that visible contact was made and the original call should have stood. Arteta also questioned the need for multiple replays. He suggested that repeated reviews contradict the idea of a clear error.

The manager admitted the decision cannot be changed. He stated that the team must now focus on the second leg. Atletico Madrid will take confidence from avoiding defeat at home. Both teams still have everything to play for in the decisive return fixture.
