BREAKING: Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Explains Why Osimhen And Lookman Won’t Face Poland And Portugal

According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday May 31, 2026, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed why Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will not be part of Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming international friendly matches against Poland and Portugal.

Chelle explained the absence of the two key attackers shortly after Nigeria secured the Unity Cup title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Jamaica.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the Malian tactician admitted that he is currently dealing with several selection issues as some members of his squad are struggling with fitness and form ahead of the June international window.

The coach disclosed that Osimhen has been excused from the squad to allow him focus on resolving his club future amid growing transfer speculation involving some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

According to Chelle, the striker needs time away from international football to ensure he is fully prepared for the next stage of his career.

He added: “The most important, we will miss two players because Victor Osimhen, he might have to change a club. I prefer for him to stay in his house because if you play, you are not one hundred percent.”

Chelle also confirmed that Lookman will miss the two friendlies after being granted time to rest following a demanding season at club level.

The Super Eagles boss stated that the winger is physically exhausted and was allowed to sit out the fixtures as part of efforts to manage his workload.

“Lookman is very tired and Atletico asked us to let him. We will travel with 18 players and we will see what happens in Poland and Portugal,” he said.

Despite the absence of two of Nigeria’s most influential forwards, Chelle remains confident that his team can compete strongly against both opponents.

The coach insisted that the Super Eagles will approach the matches with determination and will not be intimidated by the quality of the opposition.

Looking ahead to the fixtures, the former Mali coach acknowledged the strength of Poland and Portugal, describing the latter as one of the best teams in world football.

He added that the games present an important opportunity for Nigeria to test themselves against top-level opposition as preparations continue for future international competitions.
