According to a report by Arise TV on Wednesday, June 3, 2025, PDP chieftain Frederick Agbedi has dismissed a rival group within the party, describing its members as impostors and insisting that the PDP remains capable of overcoming its internal challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a recent interview, Agbedi made the remarks while responding to concerns that divisions within the opposition party could undermine any effort to present former President Goodluck Jonathan as a consensus candidate.
The comments came amid growing debate over reports that a faction of the PDP had endorsed Jonathan for the presidency despite the former leader not publicly confirming any intention to contest.
Responding to questions about the party’s internal crisis, Agbedi said, “I can authoritatively tell you that the other group you described as a faction of PDP, as far as I’m concerned, are impostors.”
He argued that recent court decisions support the legitimacy of the group he represents and insisted that the party remains on a solid footing despite disagreements among members.
According to Agbedi, every political organization experiences challenges, but those challenges should not be mistaken for a permanent breakdown of party structures.
He expressed confidence that Jonathan possesses the leadership ability to unite different interests within the PDP and restore cohesion if he eventually emerges as the party’s candidate.
Agbedi also rejected claims that the party’s divisions would weaken its electoral prospects, stating that Nigerians are more concerned about finding a credible alternative to the current administration than about internal disputes.
The PDP leader maintained that Jonathan’s popularity and political experience would help rally members behind a common objective and strengthen the party’s chances in the next election cycle.
He concluded by expressing optimism that the PDP would resolve its differences and present a united front, arguing that the party still has the capacity to attract broad national support.
