BREAKING: Status Quo Does Not Mean Dates, Status Quo Means Situation — Melaye Breaks Silence On Latin Phrase

Prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dino Melaye, has continued to raise concerns over the role of electoral authorities, alleging bias and misinterpretation of legal directives in the country’s political process.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Melaye accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of acting in a manner that, according to him, suggests alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“They are not just wearing APC jersey. They have become the spokesperson for APC because you have seen what INEC is doing. Simple interpretation of an order,” he said.

Melaye further argued that the electoral body had gone beyond what he described as a straightforward understanding of legal directives, suggesting that the issue did not require complex legal interpretation.

“It is something that is very elementary but they have gone beyond misinterpreting that aspect of the order. Forget the Latin jargon,” he added.

The ADC chieftain went on to explain his interpretation of the legal concept of “status quo,” stating that it refers to the prevailing situation prior to the emergence of disputes.

“The lucid elucidation is simple. What the situation was before the hostility, before the fight, before the war and what is the situation. And let me tell you this for free that status quo does not mean dates. Status quo means situation. It doesn’t mean dates before. No, it means situation as they were before the hostility,” Melaye stated.
