According to the Anadolu Agency, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a closely watched visit that highlights the growing partnership between Russia and China as global tensions continue to rise over the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

The two-day trip comes just days after current U.S. President Donald Trump wrapped up his own state visit to China, placing Beijing at the center of intense diplomatic activity between some of the world’s biggest powers.

Putin was welcomed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi before heading to the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, where he is expected to hold key talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.

At the heart of the discussions are expected to be the worsening Iran crisis, expanding trade ties, and major energy projects, including the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline.

The Kremlin said Putin arrived with a large delegation of senior officials and business leaders, underlining the growing economic and political cooperation between Moscow and Beijing at a time when both countries face increasing pressure from the West.

Ahead of the visit, Putin described Russia’s relationship with China as being at an “unprecedented level” and insisted the partnership was “not directed against anyone.”

In a video address released before leaving for Beijing, the Russian leader warmly referred to Xi as a “longtime, good friend,” reflecting the increasingly personal tone that has come to define ties between the two leaders.

Putin also highlighted booming trade between the two countries, saying bilateral commerce has now surpassed $200 billion, with most payments being carried out “almost entirely in rubles and yuan.”

The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Russia-China friendship treaty signed in 2001 and comes as China strengthens its role as a major diplomatic power capable of engaging both Moscow and Washington during one of the most tense periods in global politics in recent years.
