BREAKING: Politicians With Access To INEC Ballot Security Features Will Produce Their Own Ballot Papers – Igini

In a recent interview shared by Arise News, former Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, raised fresh concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the evolving legal framework guiding elections, Igini warned that recent developments could expose the system to manipulation if urgent safeguards are not introduced. He expressed particular worry about the handling of ballot materials and the level of access granted to certain political actors.

According to him, “Politicians who have access to the security features of INEC ballots are going to produce their own ballot papers.” He noted that such a possibility poses a serious threat to transparency and could undermine public confidence in election outcomes.

Igini stressed that the integrity of any election begins at the polling unit, adding that once the foundation is compromised, the entire democratic process is at risk. He also pointed out that increasing reliance on the courts to resolve electoral disputes may overburden the judiciary and shift focus away from credible voting procedures.

He called on relevant authorities, including Independent National Electoral Commission, to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure stricter control of sensitive materials.

The former commissioner concluded that without immediate reforms and accountability, Nigeria’s democracy could face significant challenges in the coming electoral cycle.
