BREAKING: People Come to The Front Of My House to Search My Garbage for Food Because of Hardship – Dino Melaye
Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has drawn attention to the deepening economic hardship in Nigeria, sharing a personal account that he says reflects the severity of the situation faced by many citizens.
Melaye made the statement during an interview on the Mic On Podcast, where he discussed governance, economic realities, and the growing struggle among ordinary Nigerians to meet basic needs. According to him, the current economic climate has pushed some individuals to desperate measures in search of food.
“People come to the front of my house, open my garbage basket looking for what to eat, because of the bad economy,” he said.
The former senator explained that this was not a one-off occurrence but something he has personally observed multiple times, describing it as both shocking and troubling. He noted that seeing individuals rummage through refuse for food underscores the level of deprivation being experienced in parts of the country.
According to Melaye, such incidents are clear indicators of a wider economic crisis, one that is affecting households across different social classes. He pointed out that rising living costs, inflation, and reduced purchasing power have made it increasingly difficult for families to afford basic necessities, particularly food.
“This is not something you hear about; this is something you see. When people are going through your waste to find something to eat, then you know there is a serious problem,” he added.
He further explained that many Nigerians are now struggling to maintain even the most basic standard of living, with some unable to secure regular meals. He stressed that the situation goes beyond statistics and economic reports, manifesting in real-life experiences that highlight the urgency of the crisis.
Melaye also linked the issue to broader structural challenges within the economy, noting that unemployment and underemployment continue to compound the problem. According to him, when people lack stable sources of income, their ability to afford essential goods becomes severely limited.
“Feeding has become a luxury for many homes. People are not eating well, and in some cases, they are not eating at all,” he said.
The former lawmaker called on policymakers to take urgent steps to address the economic conditions, emphasizing the need for practical solutions that directly impact citizens’ welfare. He suggested that improving access to affordable food and creating sustainable economic opportunities should be at the forefront of government priorities.
He also warned that prolonged hardship could lead to wider social consequences if not addressed promptly, including increased desperation and potential instability. According to him, economic challenges often have ripple effects that extend beyond individual households to affect society as a whole.
