Paul Scholes has revealed that he would prefer Manchester United to appoint either Luis Enrique or Thomas Tuchel over Michael Carrick for the club’s permanent managerial role, although he admits both options may be unrealistic, according to Manchester Evening News.

Manchester United are currently weighing up their next long-term head coach following a strong interim spell from Carrick, who has overseen an impressive run of results since taking charge. The former United midfielder has guided the team back into Champions League qualification contention and stabilised performances in the second half of the season.

Despite Carrick’s progress, Scholes believes the club should still aim for managers with proven elite-level experience if they are available.

Speaking in his punditry role, Scholes identified PSG boss Luis Enrique and England manager Thomas Tuchel as his preferred choices, highlighting their pedigree at the highest level of European and international football.

“Look, if there was a Thomas Tuchel or a Luis Enrique available, which I don’t think there is, then I’d be sceptical of Michael taking it,” Scholes said. “But I don’t think they are available, so I think Michael is probably the best candidate for it now.”

Tuchel, who has previously been linked with the Old Trafford job, recently committed his future to the England national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup cycle. Meanwhile, Enrique remains in charge at Paris Saint-Germain, with the French club keen to extend his contract following strong domestic and European performances.

Scholes’ comments underline the challenge facing United’s decision-makers, who must balance ambition with practicality in the search for a permanent successor.

Carrick, meanwhile, continues to strengthen his case. Since stepping in as interim manager, he has overseen a series of important victories, including wins against several top-six Premier League sides, and has earned praise for his tactical flexibility and calm approach.

However, Scholes suggested that while Carrick may be the most realistic option, the club must carefully assess what other elite-level managers are genuinely available before making a final decision.

Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor.
