BREAKING: Opposition Shake-Up as PDP, ADC Consider Joint 2027 Candidate
The Seyi Makinde-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have agreed to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
This decision was announced on Saturday during an opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The communiqué was read by PDP Chairman Tanimu Turaki, who emphasized the parties’ resolve to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, despite what they described as efforts by the APC to position Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate in 2027, opposition parties are determined to field candidates across all levels—while working toward a consensus presidential flagbearer.
Meanwhile, several prominent figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi—have already signaled interest in contesting for the ADC ticket.
The parties also called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Ojo Amupitan. They accused him of bias in favour of the ruling party and argued that his continued leadership could undermine public trust in the credibility of the 2027 elections.
Turaki stated that Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral umpire’s neutrality, warning that retaining him could heighten tensions and potentially trigger unrest if not addressed.
