The Peoples Democratic Party has denied claims of a leadership vacuum following the Supreme Court ruling, insisting that its leadership structure remains intact and fully operational. The party clarified that the judgment only nullified the Ibadan convention and did not address the appointment, suspension, or removal of any officials.

Party spokesman Jungudo Mohammed maintained that the current National Working Committee, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu, remains legitimate. He also dismissed claims of a Board of Trustees takeover as unconstitutional, urging the public and media to rely on verified information and avoid portraying the party as divided.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has attributed Peter Obi’s victory in the 2023 presidential election in Edo to what he described as the failure of the previous state administration. He argued that the outcome was not due to Obi’s political strength and expressed confidence that the former candidate would struggle to secure similar support in 2027.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to deliver 2.5 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election, citing growing public support and ongoing development projects funded through federal allocations. He also defended his remarks regarding Obi’s visit to the state as a security precaution, while praising Tinubu’s leadership, particularly policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidy, as signs of strong governance ahead of the 2027 polls.

2027: Abejide dumps ADC, cites ‘hijack’, legal uncertainty

Leke Abejide has exited the African Democratic Congress, citing internal crisis, alleged hijacking of the party structure, and ongoing legal disputes ahead of the 2027 elections. He said the uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership and lack of recognised officials to endorse nomination forms forced him to seek a more stable political platform.

Abejide denied claims of expulsion, insisting he voluntarily withdrew his membership, and accused unnamed actors of destabilising the party. He also signalled alignment with the political direction of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating his intention to continue his political ambitions under a more structured and reliable platform.

Trump says will raise US tariffs on EU cars, trucks to 25%

United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25 per cent, citing the bloc’s alleged failure to comply with an earlier trade agreement. The previous deal, reached last year, had limited tariffs on EU automobiles and parts to 15 per cent, below the rate imposed on several other trading partners.

The proposed hike, set to take effect next week, comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and European leaders, including criticism directed at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Germany, a major exporter of vehicles within the EU, is expected to be significantly affected if the new tariff policy is implemented.
