Former Kano South Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya was unable to win a return to the Senate after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chose former NARTO leader Alkasim Ibrahim Batayya as its flagbearer for the 2027 elections, according to a DAILY POST story published on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Gaya, who had been eyeing the NDC’s senatorial ticket for Kano South after recently joining the party from the APC and ADC, was instead passed over due to a consensus agreement within the party.
The agreement, according to reports, was made during a political meeting hosted by former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his home in Kano.
The spokesperson for the party, Mansur Kurugu, verified that Gaya accepted the outcome and promised complete backing for Batayya’s candidacy.
In order to prevent internal primaries, he continued, the consensus agreement would be used to identify other candidates in the state.
Later, a video surfaced showing Gaya supporting the party’s choice in public.
This is a significant setback for the former senator, who previously led Kano State during the Third Republic and represented Kano South in the Senate from 2015 to 2023.
In what is looking to be a close contest in 2027, Batayya is now anticipated to compete against the current holder of the seat, Senator Sumaila.
