According to a report by Al-Jazeera on Wednesday, June 3, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has defended recent missile and drone attacks linked to Kuwait and Bahrain, describing the operations as acts of “self-defence” in response to what Tehran claims were hostile actions involving foreign military forces operating in the region.

In remarks published on his official account on X, Araghchi said Iranian forces targeted specific locations that he alleged were being used by United States military personnel to launch operations affecting civilian maritime activity and violating existing ceasefire understandings. He maintained that the strikes were a direct response to earlier incidents attributed to those facilities.

His comments come amid reports that Kuwait intercepted a wave of around 30 ballistic missiles and drones, while one of the strikes reportedly impacted an airport facility, resulting in at least one fatality and multiple injuries. Authorities in the affected countries have not fully detailed the extent of the damage, but regional tensions have increased following the incidents.

Araghchi argued that Iran’s actions should be viewed within the context of ongoing hostilities, insisting that the country would continue to respond to any attacks originating from positions it associates with foreign military involvement. According to him, Tehran’s position has remained consistent: any strike on Iranian territory or assets would be met with a response directed at the source of that attack.

He further stated that measures such as sanctions or military pressure would not achieve political objectives against Iran, warning that continued escalation would only deepen instability in the region. He added that diplomatic or economic coercion had already failed in the past and would not produce different outcomes through renewed conflict.

Iran’s military leadership also issued a separate statement claiming that its forces had carried out retaliatory operations against locations from which missiles or hostile actions were allegedly launched toward Iranian infrastructure and naval assets. Officials reiterated that the response was proportional and tied to specific incidents they attribute to foreign-linked operations.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry placed responsibility for the escalation on Kuwait and Bahrain, arguing that their governments allowed the presence of United States military facilities on their soil. According to the ministry, these bases were being used in ways that Iran considers hostile, and therefore, Tehran views the host countries as bearing indirect responsibility for the consequences of such cooperation.
