According to a report by Al-Jazeera on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Iran has dismissed recent allegations from the United States accusing Tehran of plotting to assassinate American officials, describing the claims as politically motivated and aimed at diverting attention from Washington’s own conduct toward Iran.
In a statement released through the Foreign Ministry, spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei rejected comments made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had suggested during a congressional hearing that Iran was engaged in efforts to target senior American figures. Baghaei described the accusation as baseless and part of a broader pattern of hostile rhetoric directed at Tehran.
According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the United States is attempting to present itself as a victim while ignoring what Iran alleges are long-standing actions against its sovereignty and population. Baghaei argued that such claims are intended to “distort reality” and shift focus away from Washington’s regional policies.
“Everyone interprets others based on their own mindset and behaviour,” Baghaei said in a post shared on X. He further stated that attempts to “play the victim” would not erase what he described as serious violations committed against the Iranian people.
The Iranian spokesperson accused Washington of hypocrisy, insisting that the allegations do not reflect the actual conduct of Iran but instead mirror the accusations being made. He maintained that such narratives are part of a wider political strategy aimed at justifying pressure against Tehran on the international stage.
Iran, however, linked the accusations to broader geopolitical developments, referencing past military confrontations and ongoing disputes over nuclear activities and regional influence. Iranian officials argue that Western governments frequently level accusations without providing credible evidence, particularly in periods of heightened diplomatic or military tension.
Tehran also reiterated its position that it has been the target of sustained pressure and hostile actions over several years. Iranian authorities maintain that these actions have included economic sanctions, political isolation efforts, and military operations attributed to Israel and its allies in coordination with the United States.
