According to a report by the Daily Post on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Hungary’s Prime Minister-elect, Peter Magyar, has declared that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he sets foot in Hungary while still wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC). His statement signals a significant shift in the country’s stance toward the ICC’s authority.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Despite this, Hungary did not act on the warrant when Netanyahu visited Budapest in April 2025.
Magyar, however, has made it clear that his incoming administration will take a different approach. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized Hungary’s obligations as a member of the ICC, stating that any individual sought by the court must be detained upon entry into the country.
He further stressed this commitment by saying, “If a person wanted by the ICC enters our territory, that person must be taken into custody,” making it clear that Netanyahu would not be exempt from such action.
In addition to this position, Magyar announced plans to halt Hungary’s earlier move to withdraw from the ICC. He indicated that this reversal would take effect by June 2, reinforcing the country’s renewed alignment with international legal frameworks.
This development follows the end of Viktor Orbán’s 16-year leadership, after Magyar’s centre-right Tisza party secured a decisive electoral victory on April 12, ushering in a new direction for Hungary’s foreign and legal policies.
