According to a report by the Punch on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Ambassador Blessing Fubara Senior, the brother of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Rivers State governorship election under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, promising to serve only one term if elected.

The governorship aspirant made the declaration ahead of the party’s primary election, presenting himself as a capable and determined leader committed to restoring peace, stability, and economic progress in the state. He described his ambition as part of a broader effort to reposition Rivers State and return it to what he called its rightful place as the treasure base of the nation.

Fubara lamented what he described as the current political and economic challenges facing the state, saying Rivers had suffered setbacks that had affected its development and prestige. He maintained that urgent action was needed to reverse the trend and restore confidence among residents and investors.

Speaking on his plans, he said, “I have vowed to do just a 4-year one-term tenure to bring the expected prosperity and development in River State.”

He explained that his decision to commit to a single term was driven by his desire to preserve the state’s long-standing zoning arrangement, insisting that the Rivers South-East Senatorial District must be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure in line with the state’s political understanding.

The aspirant warned that altering the rotational system could create political instability and set a dangerous precedent for future leadership transitions in the state. He stressed that respecting the zoning formula was necessary to sustain peace and fairness across the various senatorial districts.

Fubara also called on his supporters across the 23 local government areas of the state to mobilise massively for the party’s primary election, expressing confidence that grassroots backing would outweigh financial influence in determining the outcome.

He further stated that Rivers people had the collective strength to reclaim the state’s political direction, insisting that the power of the people remained greater than the influence of money.
