According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a new turn after a faction of the party led by Nafiu Bala announced Professor Chris Uba as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Abuja, where the faction also presented party flags to 29 governorship candidates drawn from different parts of the country.
Speaking at the event, Bala said the faction decided to zone its presidential ticket to the southern region in line with the principles of fairness, equity, inclusion, and federal character.
He explained that three aspirants initially indicated interest in contesting for the presidential ticket. According to him, the aspirants included Dr. Bashir Sani, Prince Williams Charles, and Professor Chris Uba.
Bala stated that after consultations, the faction adopted a consensus arrangement permitted under the Electoral Act. He noted that two of the aspirants voluntarily stepped down and endorsed Uba as the consensus candidate.
According to him, the decision was reached to strengthen unity within the faction and ensure a smooth nomination process ahead of the 2027 elections.
The factional leader further maintained that the consensus method was applied not only to the presidential ticket but also to governorship, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly nominations conducted by the group.
Bala said the arrangement complied with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act, which recognize consensus as one of the lawful methods political parties can use in selecting candidates.
He subsequently declared Professor Chris Uba as the faction’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general election.
The development comes amid ongoing disagreements within the ADC following separate primary elections and competing claims to party leadership by different groups within the opposition party.
