Former England captain David Beckham has been named the UK’s first billionaire sportsman after the latest Sunday Times Rich List valued the combined fortune of him and his wife Victoria Beckham at £1.185 billion.
The couple now rank second among sporting figures in Britain, behind the family of former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone, whose wealth stands at £2 billion.
Golfer Rory McIlroy sits seventh with £325m after securing back-to-back Masters titles, while Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, slipped from seventh to ninth overall as his fortune fell by £1.85 billion to £15.194 billion.
Beckham’s business empire continues to grow through his role as co-owner of Inter Miami CF, widely regarded as the most valuable franchise in Major League Soccer, estimated at $1.45 billion.
The 51-year-old, knighted in November, also earns heavily through ambassador roles with brands including Adidas and Hugo Boss.
Victoria Beckham’s fashion label remains a major driver of the couple’s wealth following her pop career with the Spice Girls.
Promoters Barry Hearn and Eddie Hearn also joined Britain’s billionaire club with a combined £1.035 billion through Matchroom Sport.
In the athlete rankings, boxer Anthony Joshua placed eighth with £240 million, just ahead of rival Tyson Fury at £162 million.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton came fifth with £435 million, while England captain Harry Kane and two-time Wimbledon winner Andy Murray shared 10th place on £110 million.
