BREAKING: Datti Reopens Old Wound, Questions Official Silence on Abiola’s June 12 Victory
Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has drawn parallels between the June 12, 1993 election and the 2023 presidential poll, revealing that he voted for MKO Abiola and insisting that Abiola’s supporters believed that they won the election even though the result was not declared.
In a Channels Television interview, Baba-Ahmed made this statement while dismissing claims that the APC was not responsible for the problems in the opposition parties, stating that APC lost the 2023 election but brazenly took power against the constitution.
When he was told that the courts and official data affirmed APC’s victory, he responded that while the courts have the power to declare a winner and make it stand, citizens still have the constitutional right to say APC did not win. He maintained that Labour Party won the election.
When asked if he was traumatized by the loss, Baba-Ahmed said no, pointing to June 12 as proof of the power of belief.
He noted that Abuja now has a stadium named after Moshood Abiola, and Democracy Day was moved to June 12 because Nigerians believed Abiola won, even though the result was never declared. He said that anyone who says Abiola didn’t win would face public backlash today.
He added that in the same way, they believe that Labour Party won the 2023 election. He questioned why IReV was switched off, why the constitution was breached, and why INEC Chairman Mahmoud Yakubu declared results at 4 a.m. He argued that he believes Labour Party won in 2023 and that belief is what kept June 12 alive.
In his words, “June 12th, let me then remind you. Today in Abuja, you have Moshood Abiola Stadium. You have, in fact, what we call Democracy Day, removed from what it used to be and installed on June 12th simply because they believed.”
“That is the power of belief. They said they won the election. I voted Abiola in 1993, just for your information. The result of June 12th was never declared. Yet today if you say that he didn’t win the election, you are one of those who will shred somebody into pieces.”
“If you say, but they believe they won the election and it stands, so I believe we won 2023 presidential elections.
