According to a report by London Evening Standard on Wednesday June 3, 2026, Arsenal’s summer transfer plans may be more uncertain than expected, with reports suggesting the club could lose a first-team squad player for a relatively small fee despite previously believing their squad structure was stable going into the new season ahead.
The issue does not involve a star player or major contract dispute, but rather a squad goalkeeper who has provided valuable depth throughout the campaign, and whose future could now be influenced by a contractual clause in his current deal.
According to reports, Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has a clause allowing him to leave for around £5 million, matching the fee paid when he joined from Chelsea, meaning a move could become possible if another club shows interest.
Kepa joined Arsenal in 2025 on a three-year contract after a move from Chelsea, arriving as experienced backup and competition for David Raya, while also offering reliability in cup competitions and rotation matches across the season.
The 31-year-old has played for several major clubs including Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bournemouth, bringing significant experience to Arsenal’s squad, even though his role has largely been limited to supporting duties behind the first-choice goalkeeper.
Reports suggest Arsenal are currently relaxed about the situation, but the clause means they could still lose him if another club offers a starting role, which may appeal to Kepa at this stage of his career.
If he leaves, Arsenal would be forced back into the market for an experienced backup goalkeeper, a role they believed was already solved last summer as part of their wider squad planning strategy.
For now, Kepa remains part of the squad, but the low-value release clause ensures his situation could quickly become a talking point as clubs evaluate opportunities during the summer transfer window period.
