Lawyer and political analyst Maxwell Opara has argued that the political fortunes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election may depend less on his own campaign and more on how effectively the Nigeria Democratic Congress manages its internal affairs.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Monday, June 1, 2026, Opara said the ability of the NDC to maintain party cohesion and build a strong political structure around its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could significantly influence the outcome of the next presidential contest.

According to Opara, Atiku’s chances of emerging victorious are closely tied to developments within the NDC.

“Whether Atiku will emerge has a lot to do with what the NDC is doing,” he said.

The political analyst argued that if the NDC succeeds in resolving its internal challenges, organizing effectively, and mobilizing credible grassroots support, it could pose a major obstacle to Atiku’s presidential ambition.

Opara maintained that Obi remains a formidable political figure with considerable public acceptance and suggested that a well-organized NDC could limit Atiku’s prospects despite the former vice president’s political experience and support base.

“If the NDC puts its house in order and fields Peter Obi — a man who is at least 90 to 95 percent accepted by the masses of this country — then Atiku will have difficulty even if he is the only candidate from the north,” Opara stated.

However, he warned that internal disunity or the influence of rival political interests within the party could weaken the NDC’s position and create an opening for Atiku to strengthen his electoral prospects.

The lawyer expressed concern that opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress must first overcome their own organizational difficulties if they hope to mount a credible challenge in 2027.

He concluded that the actions taken by the NDC in the coming months could prove decisive not only for Peter Obi’s campaign but also for Atiku’s chances of emerging as the principal opposition contender in the race for the presidency.

(The hidden truth)

Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor.
