According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the lawmaker representing Surulere I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has denied allegations linking him to the alleged orchestration of the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in 2025.

Elliot spoke during an appearance on ‘Sunrise Daily,’ a programme aired on Channels Television on Tuesday, where he rejected claims that he initiated or coordinated the move that led to Obasa’s temporary removal from office.

According to him, he was not involved in planning the impeachment and only became aware of the situation after returning to the country.

The actor-turned-politician explained that he was outside Nigeria when the political crisis unfolded within the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He stated that by the time he returned, most members of the Assembly had already signed the impeachment document before he eventually added his signature.

Elliot maintained that the issue had already been resolved and that the Assembly had moved forward from the controversy.

He stressed that Obasa remained the Speaker of the House after the situation was addressed internally within the ruling party and among lawmakers.

The controversy resurfaced after comments credited to the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, who reportedly mentioned Elliot among lawmakers associated with the move against the Speaker.

Gbajabiamila was said to have made the remarks during a stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress held in Lagos last Thursday.

During the meeting, Gbajabiamila reportedly suggested that Elliot’s role in the political dispute almost affected his position within the political structure.

The comments reignited public discussion surrounding the crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly and the individuals believed to have participated in the impeachment process.

He said, “It was a topic that was already dead and buried. It was sorted out and the House is already moving on. Right Honourable Mudashiru Obasa continued as the Speaker of the House.

“I did not mastermind anything. I had nothing at all. The only thing I did was to append my signature when I came back and I saw a bunch of us, if not all of us, had already appended a signature to say, ‘Oh, it was the party who wanted it.’
