The immediate past President-General of the Igbo Delegate Assembly, Chief Chi Nwogu, has stated that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, faced structural challenges during the 2023 presidential election, which affected his performance.
In an interview published by The Sun Nigeria on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Nwogu stated that Obi had no elected representatives across several northern states and that the Labour Party lacked a strong political structure in many parts of the region.
He added that the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Kano State during the election defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly before the general elections, a development he said further weakened the party’s presence in the state. Nwogu said, “Don’t forget that in the 2023 Presidential elections, Obi truly had no representation in many Northern states. No House of Assembly member, no House of Representatives member, no senator and no governor. Even in Kano here, the guy that was pretending to be his governorship candidate defected to the APC just days to the general elections.”
He noted that despite these limitations, the combined votes secured by Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the 2023 presidential election exceeded those obtained by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adding that this outcome strengthened his belief that an alliance between both politicians could become a major force in the 2027 presidential race.
According to him, an Obi–Kwankwaso partnership, if properly structured and managed under the NDC platform, could significantly improve their chances in the next election.
He acknowledged that the political environment has evolved since then, noting that Tinubu now enjoys the advantages of incumbency, which could strengthen his position ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, Nwogu argued that the circumstances surrounding the next election would differ from those of 2023, as voters now have a clearer assessment of the performance of the current administration.
He added that the North-West and North-East regions played significant roles in Tinubu’s victory in 2023, following strong support from several state governors.
