BREAKING: How Okonjo-Iweala Nearly Became Atiku’s 2027 Running Mate Before Amaechi’s Emergence

According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, June 28, 2026, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s selection of former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket for the 2027 presidential election reportedly followed weeks of internal consultations and political maneuvering.

According to party insiders, although Amaechi eventually emerged as the preferred choice, influential figures within the ADC initially pushed for a vice-presidential candidate from the South-East.

Among the names considered were former Senate leader Ben Obi, former Imo State governor Emeka Ihedioha, and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Party leaders reportedly believed that any of these personalities could strengthen the coalition’s appeal in the South-East.

Sources further disclosed that a delegation led by a prominent North-East politician visited Okonjo-Iweala during her recent birthday celebration.

While the visit appeared to be a goodwill gesture, it reportedly included discussions about the possibility of her joining the presidential ticket.

However, she neither accepted nor rejected the proposal, instead advising the delegation to conduct wider consultations across the South-East and South-South before making a final decision.

As discussions continued, the name of former Cross River State governor Senator Liyel Imoke also gained traction.

Supporters viewed him as a loyal ally of Atiku who could rally support across the South-South and strengthen the party’s electoral prospects.

Despite these alternatives, senior party stakeholders eventually concluded that reopening the contest for the vice-presidential slot could deepen internal divisions.

They therefore settled on Amaechi, citing his experience as a former Rivers State governor, ex-chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and former Minister of Transportation.

Sources added that throughout the selection process, Atiku maintained regular communication with Amaechi, helping to ensure a smooth conclusion to the negotiations.

His eventual nomination reflected a compromise aimed at balancing regional interests while preserving party unity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
