Mercy Eke has said she checks a partner’s phone only when she is already looking for a reason to end the relationship, admitting that the habit has previously robbed her of peace. Speaking on Toke Moments, she said searching for evidence of betrayal creates anxiety and often leaves people unable to walk away even after finding what they were looking for.

She said she has learned to protect her peace by refusing to investigate unless wrongdoing is placed directly before her, while still believing that losing respect for a man is enough reason to leave.

In Mercy Eke’s words: “I do check phones, and I want to stop it because if you’re looking for something, you will find it. If I look at a man’s phone, I’m looking for reasons to leave him. Maybe I’m tired of the relationship and I want to break up with the person, then I tell myself, ‘Just check the phone. You’ll find something, and I’ll hold on to that one and leave.’”

She added: “I wasn’t always like this, but I didn’t like what it used to do to me. The way my heart would be beating, the way I would lose peace, it wasn’t worth it. So I thought, for my peace of mind, if I leave you and you still make me catch you, then you wanted me to catch you because I’m not going to check your phone, check the cameras or go through your things.”

She continued: “When I don’t respect a man, it’s really bad. If I lose all respect, I’ll just leave you. It’s better for me to leave because every day I remember, I’ll just be like, ‘You really got me.’”
