According to a video posted on Mic on Podcast on YouTube, on Sunday June 28, 2026, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Communications, pushed back strongly against claims that the president is losing public support, saying his personal interactions with ordinary Nigerians across the country tell a very different story from what critics and opposition voices are projecting.
Dare, who was speaking as a guest on the Mic on Podcast, dismissed what he described as sentiments and feelings that are not backed by any credible data or structured survey.
He argued that it is irresponsible to declare a sitting president unpopular without following the proper standards of polling methodology used in other democracies around the world. He pointed to international examples, noting that when assessments are made of leaders like United States President Donald Trump, proper templates are followed, including defined target audiences, reliable sample sizes, carefully designed questions, and stated margins of error.
He said Nigeria deserves the same standard before anyone makes sweeping claims about presidential popularity.
In his words, Sunday Dare said, “Let me tell you emphatically. Because being a journalist, an investigative one at that, I move around a lot. I travel a lot. I sit in places when people don’t know I’m the person. I interrogate people. I ask them questions. I observe and I see what’s going on.
“In one breath, you can say, oh, people are saying the president is not popular. But then you flip the coin. I can tell you so many people have said, this president is taking the tough decisions, is trying to fix this country, we know it’s not going to be an easy journey and we are ready to make necessary sacrifices,” he said.
Dare added that Nigerians often suffer from what he called selective visioning and selective auditioning, meaning people tend to focus only on the negatives while ignoring evidence of progress on the ground.
He maintained that a country the size of Nigeria, which he described as a bellwether for Africa, must be governed based on facts and hard data rather than popular sentiment or opposition noise.
He also referenced the administration’s economic reform agenda as evidence that the government is making the kinds of difficult but necessary decisions that previous administrations refused to make.
