Arsenal’s £50m Transfer Strategy May Change After Major William Saliba Injury Update

Published

A report from Football London on Thursday, July 16, 2026, indicates that William Saliba has been dealing with ongoing back pain for several months, which eventually became intolerable. The Arsenal defender managed his discomfort with strong painkillers and a carefully monitored training regimen during this time.

L’Equipe reports that France’s medical team followed the same treatment approach as Arsenal during the World Cup. However, Saliba’s condition deteriorated significantly during the semi-final loss to Spain earlier this week.

During the match, the 25-year-old reportedly told his teammate Dayot Upamecano that his back felt “dead” due to the intense pain. Shortly after, he collapsed, underscoring the severity of the injury he had been enduring.

Recent reports indicate that surgery is now the most probable course of action, with Arsenal anticipating that Saliba will be sidelined for four to five months. This recovery timeline would keep the French international out at least until December.

Saliba’s extended absence is expected to significantly influence Arsenal’s transfer strategy this summer. Strengthening the defense has become an even higher priority as Mikel Arteta prepares for the early stages of the new season.

Prior to his injury, Ben White had been rumored to be leaving the Emirates, with Arsenal reportedly open to offers between £25 million and £30 million from several Premier League clubs, including Everton.

However, that situation has changed dramatically. With Saliba unavailable, Arsenal lacks experienced central defenders, making White’s versatility much more valuable. The England international has previously performed well as a center-back and can provide dependable cover when needed.

While Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Piero Hincapie can also play centrally, Arteta’s options are limited. Young defender Marli Salmon is still inexperienced, which means White’s experience, adaptability, and proven quality are now crucial to Arsenal’s plans.
