Steve Ayorinde has questioned the political consistency and long-term strategy of Nigeria’s leading opposition figures, raising concerns about the frequent defections and shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in a video published on the official YouTube channel of Arise News on May 9, 2026, Ayorinde examined the growing trend of politicians moving between parties, particularly within the opposition bloc that has recently experienced significant realignments.

He focused his remarks on the emergence and expansion of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which has attracted several prominent political figures. According to him, the constant movement of key actors into new platforms raises questions about ideological stability and party commitment.

Ayorinde specifically questioned the political trajectory of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, asking why a repeat presidential contender has continued to move between political platforms rather than remaining within a single party structure.

He stated, “why is Peter Obi, who will be running for the second or third time, unable to have his own party, why always moving?”

According to Ayorinde, this pattern of movement across parties contributes to what he described as a lack of political consistency among opposition leaders. He argued that such behaviour can weaken voter confidence and create confusion among supporters who struggle to identify a stable ideological direction.

The media expert further described the trend as one where politicians appear to operate as “political nomads,” frequently switching platforms depending on electoral circumstances rather than building enduring institutions from the grassroots level.

He noted that while incumbents and established political blocs have spent decades building strong party identities and structures, many opposition figures appear to rely on existing platforms rather than developing long-term political foundations of their own.

Ayorinde added that this practice reflects a broader challenge within Nigeria’s democratic system, where personal ambition often takes precedence over party ideology. According to him, instead of strengthening political parties over time, some leaders tend to migrate to whichever platform appears most favourable ahead of elections.

He warned that this approach makes it difficult for any opposition party to develop the structural depth required to effectively compete with dominant political forces in the country.

In his concluding remarks, Ayorinde stressed that for the opposition to be taken seriously, there must be a shift toward greater party loyalty and institutional stability. He argued that sustainable political movements are built through long-term commitment, not short-term electoral convenience.

He emphasized that building strong political institutions requires consistency, discipline, and loyalty to a shared platform, regardless of immediate political gains or setbacks.

Without such commitment, he cautioned that the cycle of defections and political realignments is likely to continue shaping Nigeria’s political landscape as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
