A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has stirred fresh political debate following his remarks about Peter Obi and his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during a recent interview reported by Channels Television on May 2, 2026, Showunmi argued that Obi’s rise to national prominence was largely influenced by his role as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election. According to him, the PDP’s campaign structure not only promoted Atiku but also projected Obi to a wider national audience, giving him visibility he previously lacked.
Showunmi criticized what he described as Obi’s current political stance, suggesting that it is contradictory for him to challenge or oppose figures who, in his view, contributed to his emergence on the national stage. He questioned why the popular “Obidient” movement did not gain traction during Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State, insisting that the movement’s strength is tied to the exposure he received in 2019.
The PDP chieftain further accused Obi of displaying a lack of political maturity in ongoing opposition coalition discussions, warning against what he characterized as attempts to dominate alliances despite joining the broader opposition movement later than others. He stressed that political collaboration requires respect for existing structures and stakeholders who have long been involved.
His remarks have sparked varied reactions across political circles and social media platforms. Supporters of Obi and the Labour Party maintain that his appeal is driven by his personal achievements and reform-oriented agenda, rather than reliance on any particular political alliance. Meanwhile, some members of the PDP view Showunmi’s comments as an important reminder of past political dynamics and the party’s role.
This situation unfolds at a time when opposition leaders are actively considering potential alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts closely monitoring how such exchanges could shape negotiations and cohesion within the opposition.
