According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, April 20, 2026, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abubakar Yusuf, has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu regarding reliance on support from APC governors as preparations gradually take shape for the 2027 general election.
He stressed that depending heavily on these state leaders may not yield the expected political advantage, particularly in a contest that will require widespread voter backing across the country.
Yusuf raised concerns about the growing number of governors defecting into the ruling party from other political platforms, noting that their presence does not necessarily translate into genuine grassroots support.
According to him, political alignment at the leadership level does not always reflect the sentiments of the electorate, suggesting that such defections could create a false sense of strength within the party.
He further pointed out that many of these incoming governors may lack the popularity required to mobilize voters effectively during a national election.
While their inclusion may appear to bolster the APC’s numerical strength on paper, Yusuf implied that electoral success ultimately depends on the confidence and approval of ordinary citizens rather than political realignments among elites.
The senator also warned that the ruling party could face internal crises if proper procedures are not followed in selecting candidates ahead of the election.
He emphasized the importance of conducting transparent and credible primary elections, cautioning that any deviation from fairness could lead to disputes, divisions, and possible fractures within the party structure.
Yusuf suggested that tensions could escalate into significant internal conflicts if party members feel marginalized or unfairly treated during the nomination process.
Such developments, he indicated, could weaken cohesion within the APC at a critical time when unity would be essential for electoral success.
In his assessment of the broader political landscape, Yusuf argued that the APC’s prospects in the 2027 presidential race may not necessarily stem from outstanding performance by the current administration.
Instead, he suggested that the absence of a formidable opposition could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the election, giving the ruling party a strategic advantage.
He said, “So Tinubu will likely win, more likely win the 2027, election. We are not jittery at all. Because, I mean, we don’t have a challenge. Who is challenging us, nobody. So if they now say, okay, Nigerians will challenge us, fine.”
